Nigeria, though a major oil producing nation in the world, can still be classified as an a evolving society owing to it's diversified nature. With over 350 ethnic groups, 774 local government areas and 36 states excluding Abuja, the federal capital territory,Nigeria is fraught with problems of ethnic rivalry, political instability and acute poverty.

The paper will present poor people's wealth creation and distribution pattern in Nigeria, the inadequate provision of social amenities and poor leadership/management of diverse groups for national stability. The case of oil rich Niger Delta is a point for reference here. The paper also analyzes the current education reforms going on in the country under the NEEDS, with a view to ascertaining its suitability and workability in the task of societal transformation and unification in line with set national goals.

Patterned after the millennium development goals (MDG's), NEEDS is Nigeria's home grown poverty reduction,health and integration strategy. The paper analyzes education reforms as they focus,among other things,on tackling the philosophies of "Unity in Diversity, wealth creation and distribution, societal egalitarianism and the promotion of gender equality and empowerment." It notes that the programs are filled with uncertainties arising from poor planning to implementation of plans.Recommendations are made for action commitment and genuine government's involvement in the implementation of the agenda.

Other studies on Women include widowhood in African Societies and gender stereotyping as it affects women education in Nigeria – both being papers presented at College Language Association Conferences held in New Orleans and Washington D.C., 2001 and 2003 respectively.
